Game Summary

Weapon-based hand-to-hand combat in 3D

Hardware Platform: -Unique or Unknown-

Game Details

Uses Midway's proprietary Zeus hardware. 15 characters plus 3 secret characters.

First MK game to use polygons/3D graphics. Marked a return to a dark, violent atmosphere after the cartoonish finishing moves from MK3. The game is JAMMA+ compatible, using a standard JAMMA connector plus a custom wire for the low punch and low kick buttons.

MK4 was shipped to arcades prematurely as version 1.0. This extremely buggy test version lacked many characters and any endings, and was panned by gamers. Midway sent out version 2.0 and apologized for the "false start." The final/complete version is 3.0.

According to the MK4 operator manual, two character names that were later changed were "Maki" (possibly Kai) and "Windgod" (probably Fujin).

** by DanElektro. Comment: "2D fighting in a 3D realm...the weapons could have been cool, but they're too cumbersome to use and ultimately become a liability against players who are skilled at regular punches and kicks. A nice try, but not a truly successful one." (2000-07-26 12:51:00Z)
