Game Details

Although not really a classic game, everyone seems to remenber Phoenix. Essentially a derivative of Galaxian, Phoenix is split into 5 waves. The first two waves are similar to Galaxian, with the warbirds peeling away from their formation to attack the player. The next two waves feature the phoenixes, which start by flying around as eggs before hatching into fully grown phoenixes. The last wave has a large battleship, which must be shot through to hit the alien at its centre. Phoenix was one of the first games with a scrolling starfield, and in addition to the left-right-fire controls also had a shield button.

***** by mboehler. Comment: "Phoenix is as great a game as you could get in 1980. I just purchased a cocktail table version of the game. I plan to restore it to its former glory." 2002-03-22 21:45:29Z

***** by Reinen. Comment: "This game must have been a cheap hire/buy back in those days - every arcade had a cabinet. Great game - especially the diving swooping Phoenix(es - plural?) - they were a pain to hit. You`d probably stand there for 15 minutes trying to hit the last one, right in the centre. You could knock the wings off with knock real effect. I must get this for Mame..." 2003-02-21 20:08:19Z

**** by marminZ80. Comment: "It's a combination of the screechy sound FX of the birds, and the irritant, sneaky way they move, what attracted me to this curious game. I was too young to be good at it.. but I liked to see that snake thing [what is it actually?] inside the mother ship getting blown up by some good player." 2003-04-22 12:37:06Z

I had found a site that I downloaded a free game, but lost it when I got a new computer...does anyone know where I can find a free download? " 2005-01-21 23:19:22Z

***** by videodan. Comment: "I remember playing Phoenix in 81 at a local convenience store that had this and Eagle before it, and I always tend to remind one from the other. Yet, Phoenix is a fun game to play, the mothership board gets me fired up! I hope to own one someday, awesome game! Right up there w/ Eagle as an all-time fave." 2005-11-25 11:10:07Z

***** by bykeeboy. Comment: "i remember the buzz of getting to the 5th wave then blasting the alien away, you didnt want to be on your last life though, boy he was a hard sucker to finish, classic game!1111 " 2006-01-13 13:44:39Z

***** by cabrioletturbo. Comment: "I played this game so good, that I needed three coins usually, daily: first to warm up, second to high score, third to cool off ;-) I managed to reset the counter while playing (yes, reached over 1 million), and folks, there was no extra lives after that, even if you reached, 3K, 4K, 5K 6K point after the reset (3-6K is owner-set paramter for when to get additional lives). I consider myself the master of the game, it is very much fun, and not boring at all, even with only 5 diff levels to play ove r and over again... There are few tricks to acquire extra points, but that is to be classified... :-)" 2008-06-03 15:25:43Z
