Comment: "a true classic, how many atari games from the 80's were relased again with the same popularity in the 90's? well this was one of them.
i'm looking for the protype edition. i've got the rom's for revision 1, 2 and 3. anyone know where i can get the prototype rom?"

Comment: "Can't say I was any good at this game when it first came out, but it was a lot of fun just to watch. A very hypnotic experience, and a must have in anyone's collection. One thing that you have to love about vectors, is how everything looks electric."

Comment: "I loved this "right brain" game! That and I've always been a sucker for that crisp vector display look!
A tip for other Tempest owners - I added a fan to the inside of the cabinet to keep the CRT display transistors from burning up. It hasn't failed since!

Comment: "Fascinating, yet simple game - I`d forgotten what the cabinet looked like until I saw it here at coinop.org - truly original as well. The gameplay was fast and frantic - the sound effects sound like Defender (or vice versa) - excellent when extremely loud. I had read somewhere that originally the gameplay was different - your `ship` remained static and the rest of the playing field moved around. Imagine that. I don`t think I would have liked it in that case. Thank phew that it evolved into the game we know now."

Comment: "how could you not like tempest, well, maybe if your an operator you dont like it, known for its monitor probs, excellent gameplay and color vector graphics, and the cabinet is probably the best part of it, very artistic and nice to look at design"

Early Atari documentation list
Submitted by Gregg Woodcock (woodcock@bnr.ca)
Here is a pretty complete list of documentation for Atari's early arcade video games. Note that "TM" stands for "Technical Manual" and "DP" stands for "Drawing Package [supplement]" which was later renamed to "SP" which stands for "Supplement Package". I am not sure what "CO" stands for but the "C" could be for "Correction" because most of the CO documents were errata or addendums to the manuals. In addition, most Atari games had "ST" documents which w

This doesn't work on all Tempest machines. (However, if you find a Tempest machine that has high scores in excess of 900K, this is a good sign). Get a score in the form of XXYYZZ, where XX > 16, 29 < YY < 60, and ZZ is a code. Some codes are: 01 - Test mode. 06, 11, 12 - 40 free games. 46 - Start at any level you like (up to level 81). There are more. This was due to a bug in the code, and was corrected in later versions.

Adapter to plug Asteroids Deluxe board into Asteroids harness
Inspired from the recent posting on converting a Gravitar/Black Widow to a Tempest/Major Havoc, I've decided to document a similar conversion to and from Asteroids Deluxe. This is a simpler conversion than the aforementioned Tempest hackery, but you should still read everything first and be sure you understand what you're doing before proceeding. Although I can't guarantee 24-hour delivery, I'll also try to respond to any questions you may have...

Programming the Atari XY Vector Generator
The information in this document is not guaranteed to be accurate, use at your own risk. The Atari Analogue Vector Generator (or AVG) is the circuitry used to draw lines on the special XY monitors of some games from the late seventies and early eighties. These include Asteroids, Battlezone, Tempest, Gravitar and Star Wars, all of which used a slightly different AVG as the games evolved. The AVG is a small computer in its own right, it has its own ROM, RAM, instruction set and stack for subro

Troubleshooting your Tempest Machine, by Gregg Woodcock

This is a file I have put together which should get you started on

problems I have seen and lots of information from the various manuals.
Monitor failures are much more common than game board failures (in fact,
I find the game boards to be fairly robust) and that topic is so lengthy
that it is covered in another

Atari Color Vector Generator 1981-1985
Last Modified on 3/14/96 The Atari vector generator is a state machine run that runs independently of the 6502 processor. The state machine has its own instruction set as well. Most of these instructions are two bytes long while one is four. The VG can do many tasks with its time. It can: HALT itself and tell the 6502 that it is done, Move the beam to the CENTER of the screen, Load SCALE info to the binary and linear scaling registers, Load STATS to the stat registers, JMP to a new me
