Game Details

Street Fighter II': Champion Edition, released in arcades in 1992 on Capcom’s CP System, was the first major update to the original Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. It allowed players to select the four previously unplayable boss characters—Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison—expanding the roster to twelve and enabling mirror matches for the first time. The game retained the original six-button layout and one-on-one fighting format but introduced subtle balance adjustments, including tweaks to character speed, damage output, and special move properties, enhancing fairness and strategic depth. These changes strengthened competitive play and contributed to its widespread adoption in arcades across Japan, North America, and Europe. Champion Edition’s success set the stage for subsequent updates such as Hyper Fighting and Super Street Fighter II, reinforcing the CP System as a dominant arcade platform in the early 1990s.
