Street Fighter IV debuted in arcades on July 18, 2008, in Japan, marking the series’ first mainline entry since 1997. Running on Taito Type X2 hardware, it featured 3D character models while maintaining traditional 2D fighting mechanics. The arcade release included 19 characters, blending returning favorites with new fighters. The game quickly became a competitive focal point, with the first U.S. cabinet appearing at Super Arcade in California in August 2008. Arcade updates followed, including Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition in 2010 and Ultra Street Fighter IV in 2014, adding characters, stages, and gameplay refinements.
